Largo police Officer Brendan Arlington has been named Officer of the Year by Indian Rocks Beach VFW Post 10094. "It's overwhelming," said Arlington, 28. "It's a great honor because we have a tremendous amount of great officers here and I don't think I necessarily stand out from them. I just think I work with a great group of people and I've benefited from that."

A Largo officer since 2004, Arlington was nominated for the award by his superiors. He is also the recipient of the department's Meritorious Service Award and the Distinguished Service Medal.

Last November, Arlington led an investigation that identified three people suspected of causing more than $30,000 in damage at Serenity Gardens Memorial Park. Earlier this year, he caught two armed men whom police suspected of planning a robbery.

The Indian Rocks VFW has been giving the award since the 1950s to a local law enforcement officer who "goes the extra mile," said post commander Jack Dell.

Arlington, a St. Petersburg native, is a graduate of St. Petersburg Catholic High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the University of Central Florida. He lives in Pinellas County, with his wife, Gina, 28; daughter, Savannah, 2; and son, Sean, 6 weeks old.
