Tackling for Tricia
Armwood junior defensive end Ryne Giddins, who tied the school record for single-season sacks 18, has an odd sidekick with him every game on the sideline. It's the head off a mannequin, a long-haired doll he has named Tricia. Last week, it had "Plant, Round 3" written on tape around its neck.
"It reminds me to take someone's head off," Giddins said with a grin.
TC hopeful about Zink's health
Tampa Catholic coach Bob Henriquez said star senior tailback Drew Zink has a 60 percent chance of playing Saturday in the 2A state championship game. Zink missed Friday's semifinal with a sprained knee but Henriquez said, "If he practices well today, it'll be a good sign."
TBC rolls on wrestling mat
Tampa Bay Christian went 5-for-5 in the championship bouts of the 14-team War Eagle Classic at Poinciana High last weekend. The Rams were sparked by Victor Fugate (103), Rossi Bruno (112), Clark Glass (119), David Alonso (125) and Kyle Koziel (140).
Guard sparks Sickles' start
The Sickles girls basketball team is off to a 9-0 start. A big reason is senior sharpshooter Shawnta Snakovsky, who surpassed 1,000 points for her career last week vs. Mitchell. Snakovsky averages 22 points per game.
Bloomingdale numbers game
1 Goals given up all season by the Newsome girls soccer team (7-1); the lone goal came Tuesday night by Bloomingdale's Nancy Davison, who redirected a pass while sliding to spark the Bulls' 1-0 win.

100 Wins by Holy Names girls basketball coach Casey Higgins, who reached the century mark Tuesday night against Clearwater Central Catholic. Higgins, in her fourth season, had won 20, 25, 22 and 27 in her first four.
