Powell Middle's varsity girls basketball team had been undefeated and previously unchallenged before traveling to the Challenger K-8 gymnasium last Tuesday night.
The Navigators ended that run with a surprising 27-25 upset of the top team in the county.
Led by Tori Hattaway's 10 points and her game-winning basket at the end of the fourth quarter, Challenger 5-2 knocked off Powell (6-1) for the first time all season.
West Hernando (6-2) is the two-time defending county champs, and the chances of the Eagles continuing that streak gained a little more hope after Powell's loss.
Powell has been led all season by the play of Mariah Byrd.
Byrd played very well in the losing effort against Challenger, scoring a game-high 15 points.
Next week's county championship tournament at Fox Chapel will wrap up the middle school girls basketball season.
Starting next Monday afternoon at 1 p.m. and carrying over to Tuesday evening at 5 p.m., all five county middle schools will face off for the crown.
Hernando Lacrosse Club: The Hernando Recreational Department is opening registration for the upcoming 2008 Hernando Lacrosse Club season.
There are three divisions in the club - youth, middle and high school. Greg Longo, who coaches the high school-age team, was the West Florida Lacrosse League's Coach of the Year in 2006.
Expected returning players include Ben Noury, a Springstead student who was an All WFLL Honorable Mention in 2006, and Sean Byrne, a Hernando Christian student who was an All WFLL Honorable Mention in 2007.
The fees for the season are $75 to join the HLC, $20-$35 for the U.S. Lacrosse membership fee and $15 for optional team shorts.
Practices begin on Monday, Jan. 14.
The Preseason Jamboree in Clearwater is on Feb. 2 to kick of the official season.
50th Anniversary of HYL: This weekend will mark the unveiling of Hernando Youth League's 50th anniversary commemorative logo.
Organization president Mike Walker and the rest of the board decided on the official logo during a vote a couple weeks ago.
A patch with this logo will be worn by all HYL sports teams in 2008 from baseball to basketball to football.
The unveiling will take place at tomorrow's annual Brooksville Holiday Parade. HYL will have a float in the parade, just as the organization usually does.
This year, however, any youth athlete that participated in an HYL sport is invited to put on their uniform and join the fun in marching along the parade route.
Volleyball: Club Hernando (AAU) volleyball will have tryouts for any girl between the ages of 10-18 on Sunday from 3-5 p.m.
For information, call Dena Frye at 398-8341.
Correction: The name for the Springstead hockey coach was wrong in last week's notebook. The coach's name is Jim Fisher.
