Mayor, firefighters can't reach deal
By Times Staff Writer
Published December 11, 2007
TAMPA - After months of negotiations, Mayor Pam Iorio and Tampa firefighters have been unable to reach an agreement on a new contract for the firefighters. The matter will go early next year to a special magistrate, who will hear both sides and issue a nonbinding recommendation. If the two parties still cannot agree, the City Council will consider the contract. The current contract expired Sept. 30, which leaves the existing contract in place. The firefighters union is asking for a 5 percent cost-of-living increase and variable merit raises that would average 5 percent a year. Iorio is offering a 2.3 percent cost-of-living increase and merit raises of 3.5 percent.

The article failed to mention that Tampa police received their requested raise of 5% for the next 3 years. What about our Firefighters? Many public safety employees are struggling to survive, unlike our athletes and city officials.
