Horses, steers, goat in auction

Hernando County Animal Services has an online auction in progress for the following animals:
- One 14-year-old sorrel and white thoroughbred cross mare, with negative Coggins test;
- An 8-year-old Bay Appendix gelding, with negative Coggins test;
- A black steer, believed to be about 1 year old;
- A red steer, believed to be about 1 year old;
- A 14-year-old bay and white thoroughbred gelding, with negative Coggins test;
- A 3-year-old bay and white Dutch warmblood mare, with negative Coggins test; and
- One black billy goat.

Pet pageant part of adoption campaign
Hernando County is recognizing December as "Home 4 the Holidays" month.
Hernando County Animal Services is joining the SPCA of Hernando County and Humane Society of the Nature Coast to participate in the Home 4 the Holidays worldwide pet adoption campaign. The goal is to find lifelong homes for the homeless pets in the county.
The Home 4 the Holidays Pet Pageant is airing throughout the month on Hernando County Government Broadcasting, Bright House cable Ch. 19. The pageant features various pets from the local shelters who need loving homes.
Those interested are also encouraged to visit one of the shelters:

BROOKSVILLE
Collectibles show to help New Hope group
A Video, Game, Sports Cards and Collectibles Show to benefit the New Hope Foundation will be Friday through Sunday at the Hernando County Fairgrounds, 6436 S Broad St.
Show hours will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Admission is $3. Parking is free. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the New Hope Foundation, a nonprofit organization that benefits homeless and needy families in the area.

Lawmakers to meet with constituents
The annual Hernando County Legislative Delegation Meeting will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 18 in the commission chambers at the Hernando County Government Center, 20 N Main St.
Participating will be Rep. Robert Schenck, Rep. Ron Schultz, Sen. Mike Fasano and Sen. Paula Dockery.
The meeting is to give Hernando County residents the opportunity to share their concerns with members of the Florida Legislature. Those wishing to address the delegation must contact Rep. Schenck's office to be placed on the agenda. Each speaker will be allotted three minutes to speak.

Pet calendars will help Humane Society
The Humane Society of the Nature Coast's 2008 Humane Society Open Hearts Calendar is now available. The calendar features the winning photos of local pets entered at the annual Nature Coast Pet Expo earlier this year, including selections from both public vote and judges' picks.
The calendars are $7 each and can be purchased at the Humane Society shelter at Wiscon and Mobley roads, Brooksville, as well as at these following Spring Hill offices: Curtis Chiropractic Clinic, 4019 Mariner Blvd.; the Paper Playhouse, 5144 Commercial Way; Spring Hill Printing Plus, 11063 Hearth Road; and AAA Auto Club, 1410 Pinehurst Drive.
Calendars can also be ordered online at www.hsofnc.com. All proceeds will benefit the pets at the Humane Society.

Refresh driving skills with AARP course
The AARP Driver Safety Program is a refresher course for drivers 50 and older. It is an eight-hour course provided in two four-hour classes.
The cost is $10. Participants must attend both segments to receive a certificate to submit to their insurance company for a possible rate reduction.

Fashion show planned at Lutheran Church
The Mary Martha Guild of Christ Lutheran Church will host a fashion show and luncheon Feb. 9 at the church, 475 North Ave. W.
Lunch will be served at noon, followed by a fashion show featuring the latest collection in clothing and accessories at Denise's Clothes Corner. Red Hat fashions and accessories will also be available.

Beach club lines up its holiday events
The Hernando Beach Club will host the following holiday events:
- Christmas Dinner Dance, Friday. Doors open at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. The Just Us duo will entertain. Tickets are $14 for members, $16 for nonmembers.
- Breakfast with Santa, 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The event will include a light breakfast, goody bags, surprise guests and a visit from Santa. The cost is $1 for children, $4 for adults. A wrapped gift valued at $10 or less should be brought for Santa to give to the child attending. Reservations required.

HUDSON
Dinner dance planned for Dec. 25
The Polish American Social Club will host a Christmas Day Dinner Dance on Dec. 25 at the clubhouse, 7615 New Jersey Ave.
Doors open at 12:15 p.m. Dinner will be served from 12:45 to 2:15 p.m. The entree choice is traditional kielbasa with ham and pierogi, or chicken parmesan, which will include the traditional Christmas wafer.
Dancing to the Music Blenders will be from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.

SPRING HILL
Orchestra to perform Sunday at VFW post
The Frankie Dee New York Orchestra will perform from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the new VFW Post 10209, 14736 Edward R. Noll Drive, off Anderson Snow Road.
The orchestra will perform a variety of music, including Big Band, Frank Sinatra, Latin, polkas and waltzes. Singers Pearl May and George Dwyer will perform with the orchestra.

Baby shower to arrive Feb. 9
Exhibitors can now register for the 11th annual World's Greatest Baby Shower that will be Feb. 9 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 13485 Spring Hill Drive.
This is a nonprofit event for expectant and new parents or guardians of babies 12 months and younger.
