Take the family  out To Florida Botanical Gardens' free stroll

The illuminated garden stroll at Florida Botanical Gardens is a soothing don't-miss holiday experience.

The garden is festooned with more than 425,000 holiday lights and will be open to the public free each night through Jan. 3.

Some special events planned include this week's Friday Nights celebration from 6 to 9 p.m., which includes music, refreshments and children's craft activities.

Music will be performed by the Florencio Guitars music trio. For a suggested $5 donation, which helps support the gardens, kids can get a photo taken with Mother Nature.

When: 6 to 10 p.m. through Jan. 3.

Public meeting today to discuss Starkey Road

A public meeting has been scheduled for today at Osceola High School to discuss the draft preliminary engineering report for the proposed Starkey Road project, which will run from Ulmerton Road to East Bay Drive.

When: 4 to 7 p.m. today.

Do some shopping while kids have their night out

Here's a great opportunity for parents to get some solo holiday shopping wrapped up: Seminole Recreation's monthly Freaky Friday kids' night out program.

This month's theme is Elves Night Out. The program, which runs 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., is a kids-only evening of fun that includes music, games, and holiday crafts and activities. The cost is $10 per child and includes a slice of pizza and a drink. Participants must have a current Seminole recreation card and be enrolled in grades K-5 to attend.

Here's a chance to learn Fort De Soto Park history

The Kiwanis Club of Seminole Breakfast invites to its next meeting those interested in learning about what happens behind the scenes at Fort De Soto Park, one of the country's best-rated beaches.

District park supervisor Bob Browning will provide an overview of the park and its history, including the restoration of the historic fort.

Holiday food drive racing against Friday deadline

The Seminole Junior Women's Club is holding a food drive to benefit local families in need. "Project Need" provides holiday food baskets to area children identified through a partnership with social workers and guidance counselors in the Pinellas County School system. The club seekssupport from businesses, social and service clubs, and individual families. Along with donations collected, the club will add a turkey or ham to each family's food basket.

To learn how to donate or assist with collections, call Michele Abramo, 399-0587, or Patricia Collins, 687-3077. To ensure delivery to children at school before the winter break, donations are needed by Friday.

Relive your youth; sign up to play adult dodge ball

If you miss the fun you had as a kid playing dodge ball, now's your chance to get back in the game.

Seminole Recreation will start an adult co-ed dodge ball league in January. Teams will play four regular season games one a week with one week of playoffs. The fee is $50 per team, and each team must be registered by a card-holding Seminole Recreation Center member.

Each team needs to start at least one female player a game, and participants must be at least 16 to play. The deadline to register is Dec. 27. Call Chris Bornfleth at 397-6085.
