LAS VEGAS

Assailants shot six young people Tuesday who had stepped off a school bus, in an attack that followed a fight over a girl at Mojave High School, authorities said. School police arrested three teenagers in the fight hours before the shooting, Sheriff Doug Gillespie said. An 18-year-old remained in critical condition with gunshots to the torso. Investigators were still seeking the gunmen.

All Maine babies to get college aid

Every child born in Maine will be eligible for a $500 college nest egg, thanks to a shoe company founder who never attended college. A foundation started by Harold Alfond, who founded Dexter Shoe Co. and died last month at age 93, will allow new parents to sign up for a $500 down payment for their child's college education. The pilot program kicks off Jan. 1 through hospitals in Augusta and Waterville and will expand statewide in January 2009, officials said. Gov. John Baldacci called the program "a first in the nation." Roughly 14,000 babies are born each year in Maine, and the foundation anticipates paying out about $7-million a year.
