Kazbour, FSU oh-so close
A year ago, Marissa Kazbour, right, was leading Bloomingdale to a 21-3-1 record. Last weekend, she started for Florida State in the national championship game against Southern California. "It was a great season," said Kazbour, a midfielder. "We got farther than we ever have before."
Kazbour started 19 games for the Seminoles and finished with three goals. FSU lost to the Trojans 2-0 in the championship game, but Kazbour has high hopes for 2008.
"We want to become national champions," she said. "We're going to work hard in the spring and hopefully bring it home next fall."
All-century team
Rick Casares and Darrell Jackson were the only standouts from Tampa named to the Florida High School Athletic Association's all-century football team, announced Wednesday. The squad consists of the top 33 players by position in Florida prep history.
Casares, a star running back at Jefferson 1950, later played for the Florida Gators and Chicago Bears. He had an 11-year NFL career. Jackson, a receiver at Tampa Catholic (1995), set national records for career receiving yards (4,594) and yards per catch (24.05) as a senior. He played for the Gators and is now in the NFL.
