Library to close for start of renovations

PALM HARBOR The Palm Harbor Library, 2330 Nebraska Ave., will close from Dec. 23 through Jan. 6 to prepare for a $1-million renovation to the library's 26,000-square-foot building. The improvements will include new paint inside and out, new carpeting and lighting, renovation of the public bathrooms, enclosed study rooms, a bigger teen area, improved literacy and tutoring facilities, a new family restroom in the children's department and a new Friends of the Library book store. The project, expected to be completed by January 2009, will be done in four phases. The library will be closed up to a week each time construction moves to the next phase and then reopen. Library hours during 2008 will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon to 5 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and closed Sunday. Call (727) 784-3332 or visit www.palmharborlibrary.org. CLEARWATER Scooter rider killed by truck identified Largo police have identified the scooter rider killed by a truck on Missouri Avenue on Wednesday as Jack Schaffer, 84, of Lady Mary Drive in Clearwater. Schaffer was trying to cross Missouri Avenue on his electric mobility scooter. He was not in a crosswalk and had reached the median when he was struck by a 1997 GMC Sierra pickup driven by Angus T. Davis III, 59, of Clearwater. Largo police are investigating the crash and awaiting blood test results. Anyone who saw the crash can call Sgt. George Edmiston at 727-586-7473. LARGO Motorcyclist hits car in U-turn, dies A 25-year-old Largo man died Wednesday night after driving his motorcycle into a car making a U-turn on Seminole Boulevard, the Sheriff's Office said. Christopher Herring, who lived on Whispering Drive E, was driving his a 2006 Suzuki GSXR motorcycle north when the accident occurred about 6:50 p.m. Witnesses told sheriff's investigators they saw Herring weaving through traffic before he crashed into a 2004 Mercury Sable station wagon as it was making a legal U-turn just south of 70th Avenue. Herring was taken to St. Petersburg General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:15 p.m. The station wagon's driver, John F. Armant, 90, and his 87-year-old wife, Maude, of Seminole, were checked by paramedics but did not go to the hospital. An investigation is continuing.
