The impact killed the scooter rider, dented the truck's hood and knocked off the scooter's seat.

Largo police identified the man killed in a traffic crash Wednesday on Missouri Avenue as Jack Schaffer, 84, of Clearwater.

Schaffer was trying to cross six lanes on Missouri from east to west on his scooter at about 2:15 p.m., police said.

He reached the inside lane when he was hit by a 1997 GMC Sierra pickup driven by 59-year-old Angus T. Davis III of Clearwater, police said.

The truck came to a stop with its left front tire atop the scooter.

Schaffer, a World War II veteran, is survived by three sons out of state and a daughter in Clearwater, according to his former wife, Patricia Black.

Davis' blood was drawn to determine what, if any, charges are warranted.

Schaffer did not use the crosswalk, police said.
