Zoning request for sand key postponed

By Times Staff Writer
Published December 15, 2007

Whatever is going to happen to the Shoppes on Sand Key is going to take a little while longer. A request to change the zoning on the 3-acre strip on Gulf Boulevard has been put off until Jan. 22 because some residents were not informed about the initial meeting set for this Tuesday, said Clearwater attorney Ed Armstrong, who is representing Ohio-based Cedarwood Development, which owns the nearby Clearwater Beach Marriott Suites and would like the property zoned "tourist." Such a zoning would allow for hotel, condo and retail development. Sand Key residents are upset about the proposal because the strip mall is the only retail area on the island and they don't want to lose it. Cedarwood officials have not said what they plan to do with the area if they buy it.
