Parents can drop off kids while shopping

The Spring Mermaids Girl Scout Senior Troop 989 of the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida will host a "Drop and Shop" from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at Fellowship Community Church, 11250 Spring Hill Drive. Children ages 4-12 can be dropped off so parents can Christmas shop. The troop will provide games, activities, crafts and movies. Each child will be given two snacks. The cost is $20 per child. Children should bring a bagged lunch. Scouts and adults providing the event are all certified in CPR and First Aid. United Way seeks tax volunteers
United Way of Hernando County needs volunteer tax preparers with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. VITA certifies volunteers to prepare free tax returns for families that are eligible for the earned income tax credit and child tax credit, but cannot afford the cost of tax preparation. Applications will be accepted through Tuesday; training will begin Thursday. Volunteers will become certified after completing the free training, and they will prepare tax returns for about five to eight hours a week from Jan. 21 through April 15.
