In this particularly literary movie season, here are books related to some new films.
Charlie Wilson's War: The Extraordinary Story of How the Wildest Man in Congress and a Rogue CIA Agent Changed the History of Our Times (Grove Press) by George Crile is, despite its bizarre covert-ops plot, a true story. Wilson helped push the Soviets out of Afghanistan; too bad that arming-the-Taliban thing didn't pan out so well.
I Am Legend (Tor Books) by Richard Matheson is a chilling 1954 science fiction-horror classic now in its third film incarnation (after The Last Man on Earth and The Omega Man) with the new Will Smith version.
The Rough Guide to Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" (Rough Guides) by Paul Simpson maps the brilliantly imagined world of the trilogy of novels that begins with The Golden Compass. It details characters and plots as well as influences on the author that range from quantum theory to Paradise Lost.
