Tampa man dies when pickup goes off road

A 24-year-old Tampa man was killed Sunday after the pickup truck he was driving veered off U.S. 301 and struck a power pole, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Faustino Orozco-Carares, 5534 Terrace Court, was driving north in an outside lane of U.S. 301 about 8:10 p.m. when he lost control of his Ford F-150 truck just south of Stannum Street, FHP officials said.
The impact caused the truck to roll several times.
Orozco-Carares, who investigators said was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.

Girl steps into path of moving vehicle
A 6-year-old girl was flown to Tampa General Hospital after she stepped in front of a moving car Monday afternoon.
Shianna Chmora of 1119 Citrus Hill Court suffered non-life threatening injuries after she walked in front of a 2005 Chevrolet, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.
The accident happened at Citrus Hill Court and Pine Street at 4:40 p.m.
Driver Tina Hicks, 45, of 1804 Alcorn Road in Valrico was traveling north on Pine Street approaching Citrus Hill Court when she saw the child and hit her brakes.
But she struck the girl in the northbound lane, Carter said.
The crash was still under investigation late Monday.
Shianna's condition was not available from hospital officials Monday.

Four nominated forfederal judgeships
Four Tampa Bay area residents are up for appointment to the federal bench, a screening committee said Monday.
The nominees include criminal lawyer William Jung, U.S. Magistrate Mary Scriven and Hillsborough Circuit Judge Charlene Edwards-Honeywell, all of Tampa, and Sarasota civil lawyer Thomas Icard Jr.
Their names will be sent to Sens. Mel Martinez and Bill Nelson for consideration, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
Federal judges are appointed for life at annual salaries of $168,500.
