Salvation Army will provide Christmas gifts

SOUTH COUNTY The Salvation Army St. Petersburg Area Command will provide Christmas gifts for children and people who would otherwise have no reason to celebrate. They will distribute donated toys, gifts and bags of food to needy families from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 5 p.m. today and Thursday. More than 2,100 children and 1,200 adults, including senior citizens in nursing homes and homebound people, have registered for Christmas assistance with the south Pinellas County Salvation Army. Nearly 900 families have asked for help this holiday season. The Salvation Army Corps Community Center is at 3800 Ninth Ave. N. Call (727) 323-2222. COUNTYWIDE Vets, SPOT team up in spay/neuter effort More than 60,000 unwanted animals are euthanized in the Tampa Bay area each year, so the nonprofit group Stop Pet Overpopulation Together (SPOT) is teaming up with local veterinarians to offer low-cost spaying and neutering for cats or dogs at least 8 weeks old. The prices are $35 for male cats, $40 for female cats, $40 for male dogs and $45 to $90 for female dogs, depending on the weight. SPOT offers low-cost spay/neuter vouchers online at www.SPOTusa.org. Call (727) 545-3463. COUNTYWIDE Tampa Bay Harvest needs volunteers Tampa Bay Harvest collects food from restaurants, supermarkets and other sources to donate to organizations that feed the hungry.
