By a 3-2 vote, School Board members on Tuesday approved a new contract that gives teachers a 6.04 percent raise plus a 1 percent increase in health insurance premiums. The raise gives the school district a boost in teacher recruitment, officials said. Beginning teachers will earn $34,000, better than their counterparts in 17 other Florida counties including neighboring Citrus. Teachers in Pasco County start at $36,420, while those in Pinellas and Hillsborough get more than $37,000. Last week, the Hernando Classroom Teachers Association approved the contract by a 97 percent margin, union officials said. Members Jim Malcolm and Sandra Nicholson opposed the measure due to discrepancies in step increases for the teachers.
