Clearwater officer fires shots, but home intruder gets away

TARPON SPRINGS - The knock on the door came while Clearwater police Officer Eliad Glenn was in the shower. When he didn't answer the door, a man forced his way into Glenn's house through a side door. Glenn, 29, grabbed his gun and fired a single shot at the intruder, missing him. The man then fled in a waiting maroon or red sedan. Glenn fired at the car, too, and may or may not have hit it, Tarpon Springs police Lt. Barbara Templeton said. The incident took place at 12:17 p.m. near Meres Boulevard and Carlton Road and appears to be connected to a nearby burglary. Just before the break-in at Glenn's home, someone broke into a house three doors down and stole wrapped Christmas presents, Templeton said. The two houses between that one and Glenn's were both vacant. Police believe the intruder was just going up and down the street looking for houses where no one was home. Glenn, a Clearwater police officer for nearly a year, has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is reviewed, Clearwater police spokeswoman Elizabeth Daly-Watts said. Tarpon police described the intruder as a black man in his 20s, standing about 5 feet 11 to 6 feet 1, with a medium build. He had a short Afro and a light mustache. He was wearing blue jeans with gray boxers and a black hooded sweatshirt. The car was a late-model, four-door sedan similar to a Toyota Camry, a Mercury Milan or a Nissan Altima. It had tinted windows and might now have bullet holes in the rear. Jonathan Abel can be reached at jabel@sptimes.com or 727 445-4157.

I am not a cop. However, this happened at MY HOME! I am proud to have this COP living in my home to protect me. A MAN WAS IN MY BEDROOM REACING IN HIS POCKETS! I am a teacher who follows the rules. Eli did what he had to do to protect me and my son!

Why do we even bother putting the uniform on anymore....these people appreciate nothing we try to do for them. But we do, and will die trying to protect YOUR family. If you don't like us, stop commiting crimes and we will never have to meet.

Last time I checked I only got paid for 8 hours a day. So when I am home Off duty I still have my first amendment rights! P.S. LEO's addresses are not public record.

I beg your pardon, Howard, but I don't think you fully understand the castle doctrine.

Isn't it (addresses) public record anyway? Through various means? Moot point. If someone wants to find you, they will.

Why is the officer being punished (administrative leave)? The only thing that went wrong is he missed his target. If he had hit his target, we would have one less criminal in our community.

Maybe you should "get over it" Sarah. I have an unmarked car and I would rather not have people know where I live. If you don't have a problem with it that is your choice.

Shot at the car? I thought you can only shoot people that break in your home if you feel your life is in danger? I guess because he is a cop he can shoot whenever. I am sure if this happened at my house I would be arrested for firing my gun.

Get over it, Rich. Others in the neighborhood and surrounding area need to know what is going on around them. I have a patrol car parked in my driveway and I'm not crying about people knowing there's an officer in my home.

On behalf of Law Enforcement Officers everywhere I would like to thank you for letting the world know where this young warrior lives. I'm sure he and his family feel very safe now.
