Powell Middle School held its first induction into the Tri-M Music Honor Society, an international program dedicated to the recognition of exceptional music students in grades 6 through 12. Students must meet music, academic, leadership, service and character criteria.

Inducted into the society were: Gina Altimari, Beverly Becker, Jason Black, Brittany Burdette, Caitlin Chase, Pedro Estrada, Josh Heckler, Ryan Hohman, Alyssa Lamberson, Lauren Leighly, Lyssa Moffett, Alexis Pletincks, Kendall Raney, Caitlin Sipple, Bronsyn Speakman, Nathan Stanina, Jasmin Ventura, Amanda Waranka, Mika Wescomb and Kaitlyn Young.

Tri-M is part of the National Association for Music Education. Because Tri-M is an honor society rather than a social club, members were chosen by chapter adviser David Pletincks, Powell's band and chorus director.

He looked for outstanding scholarship, leadership, service and character. Pletincks required participation; the students had to have been in a school music ensemble or class for at least one semester of the current school year.

Students must maintain a B average (or equivalent) in music with at least a C average in other classes during the most recent semester.

For leadership, school or community activities are considered. Service also can be a school or community activity, but the service must have been done without compensation.

In determining character, Pletincks looked for members who demonstrated respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring and citizenship.

The group will plan service opportunities in the arts. Options include helping with productions at elementary schools, volunteering at community concerts and other similar work. The groupalso will look for educational enrichment opportunities in the fine arts.
