$19.3-million certified for 7 candidates

WASHINGTON - John Edwards' presidential campaign is entitled to $8.8-million in federal matching funds, and John McCain's could get $5.8-million, election regulators said Thursday.

The amounts are part of $19.3-million the Federal Election Commission certified for seven presidential candidates who have asked to be eligible for the matching money.

Edwards and McCain are clumped together in the polls with better-financed candidates who have decided not to accept the public money. Candidates who receive matching funds must abide by spending limits.

Edwards, who has said he will accept the money, had raised $30-million by Sept. 30.

McCain spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker said the campaign had not yet decided whether to accept the matching funds. The campaign has taken out a $3-million line of credit and has said that is secured by campaign assets, not by anticipated public funds.
