WIMAUMA - Hillsborough sheriff's deputies arrested Geraldo Garcia Montejo early Tuesday, accusing him of killing a 47-year-old man on Christmas Eve and driving off.
Montejo, 20, faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident causing death and driving with a suspended license. He remained in the Orient Road Jail late Tuesday in lieu of $17,000 bail.
Authorities said he was driving the van that struck Christino Antonio Hernandez, 47, who had just turned onto North Street on his bicycle when he was killed.
Montejo drove off from the scene but deputies found him a few hours later, sheriff's spokesman J.D. Callaway said.
Late Monday, Hernandez's family went to Montejo's home at 5308 Edina St. to confront the suspect, Callaway said. Words were exchanged, but deputies broke up the confrontation before any violence could occur, Callaway said.
Alcohol is suspected in the accident, and lab results could prompt more charges, Callaway said.
