ST. PETERSBURG

Today marks the beginning of Kwanzaa, which comes from the Swahili phrase, "matunda ya kwanza" which means "first fruits."

The holiday is celebrated from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1. Each day focuses on a different principle.

3. Ujima (collective work and responsibility)

4. Ujamaa (cooperative economics)

5. Nia (purpose)

6. Kuumba (creativity)

7. Imani (faith)

A celebration kicks off at 6 p.m. at Moore's Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. The church is at 3037 Fairfield Ave. S. For information, call 686-5423.
