The Hernando County Health Department will provide an orientation for the Freedom from Smoking classes at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 7 at the office at 15470 Flight Path Drive, off Spring Hill Drive, south of Brooksville. Classes will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Mondays through Feb. 18, with the exception of a meeting Jan. 30, the 48-hour followup after the Jan. 28 "quit night." Free. Beach club holds open house, dinner

The Hernando Beach Club, 3145 Flamingo Blvd., will host an open house Jan. 11. Doors open at 5 p.m. Entertainment will be by Vic Thompkins and V To. A chicken parmigiana dinner will be available for $8. Reservations are required by Jan. 9. Call Bunni at 688-4976.

Absentee voting, registration in gear

Hernando County Supervisor of Elections Annie Williams reminds voters that 5 p.m. Monday is the deadline to register to vote or change party for the presidential preference primary, which will be Jan. 29. Absentee ballot requests are now being accepted between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays; the deadline to request an absentee ballot is 5 p.m. Jan. 23. Early voting will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, Jan. 14-26, and can be done at both election offices: 20 N Main St., Brooksville; and 7443 Forest Oaks Blvd., Spring Hill. Girls softball sets up signup days

Spring Hill Dixie Girls' Softball spring registration will be at Anderson Snow Park's softball pavilion on the following days: 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 11; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 12; 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 18; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 19. The league is open to girls ages 5 through 18. The cost is $120 for the first player and $115 for each additional player. A photocopy of each child's birth certificate is required.
