The Highway Patrol says David Belniak, 34, didn't stop at a red light.
|
|
HUDSON - A second person has died after a Christmas Day crash on U.S. 19, and the driver of the other vehicle involved has numerous violations behind the wheel, records show.
David A. Belniak of Spring Hill was heading north in a Nissan pickup about 2:20 p.m. Tuesday when he failed to stop at a red light at Little Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
He hit the back of stopped Chevrolet Tahoe carrying four people. One man died on the scene, and his wife has since died at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.
Just a month ago, Belniak, 34, completed probation following a 17-month prison stint for a drug conviction. In 2003, he was pulled over in New Port Richey on a suspicion of drunken driving, and authorities found a gallon of GHB, known as the date-rape drug, in his Mustang. He pleaded no contest to trafficking the drug and was sentenced to two years in prison and a two-year suspension of his driver's license.
In 2002, he was arrested in Hernando County on a charge of DUI. He pleaded guilty to reckless driving, a misdemeanor, and paid a fine.
In addition he has numerous speeding tickets on his record: 75 mph in a 45 mph zone in 1990; 56 mph in a 30 mph zone in 1994; 91 mph in a 45 mph zone in 1995. His most recent ticket was in September.
In 1994, he struck a pedestrian on U.S. 19 near Fivay Road. The woman died but Belniak was not charged.
Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Larry Coggins said he was not aware of Belniak's history. He said it would not have any bearing on the current investigation, unless the case winds up in front of a judge.
"That could be used against him in court, especially in a sentencing phase," Coggins said.
Belniak, who was treated and released from Bayfront, could not be reached Wednesday.
Charges in the crash are pending. Coggins said he didn't know if alcohol was involved. Investigators drew blood from both drivers, which is standard procedure.
The driver of the Tahoe, 64-year-old Raymond McWilliams of Hudson was listed in fair condition at Bayfront on Wednesday. His wife, Linda, 66, was in critical condition.
Gerard Bassi, 51, was riding in the back seat of the Tahoe. He died at the scene. Denise Bassi, Gerard's wife and Linda McWilliams' daughter, died later at Bayfront. They lived in Connecticut.
Coggins said everyone except Belniak was wearing a seat belt.
Records show his license is valid.

As of suday, David Belniak has killed three very special people. Denise bassi's Mother has passed because of Davids actions. David is the only person responsible for what he caused. The state needs to get involed and throw David in jail for life.

Now a third person has passed away as a result of this animals behavior. I hope that there is no plea bargining as seems to have happened in the past and he is forced to answer in full to 3 counts of murder.

To "I love you david" I would be ashamed to even tell him that right now. He killed four people now. You should be disgusted for caring about such an awful person and even more disgusted for even being associated with him.

In Older times the community would have already taken care of a menace like this, he'd be swinging from a tree. You have to wonder how many young girls he took advantage of being that he was caught with a gallon of date rape drug?

I just attended the funeral for these two loving people, and I will miss them greatly. From what I know, vehicular homicide is a crime, even in Florida. I hope they lock this jerk up forever. May he rot in hell.

Are we not to believe the printed facts that David has now killed 3 people while behind the wheel of a car/truck ? I think it's fair to say there is a disturbing pattern. A fancy lawyer isn't going to fix this situation. Time to hold him accountable

The state of Florida should be ashamed of itself. How dare you let anyone get behind the wheel after having a record like this. Good luck living this one down. I hope his punishment is a life sentence and the gov. gets harsh scrutiny for this case.

Is it because his father is a big builder, and that he has a million dollar home in Lake in the Woods that makes him untouchable by the law. You punish people for spitting on the side walk and let killers run free, that is not justise.

CHRIS (cont) I've seen kids on motorcycles doing wheelies through intersections, passing in turn lanes and medians..the most I've seen a pick up do is tailgate and speed..there needs to be a lot more traffic enforcement on Hwy 19..or spike strips...

Why is it always the biggest, gas guzzling pick 'me up trucks/SUV's that are the most aggressive drivers on 19? This idiot should not have been driving given his record or insurance should have been prohibitively expensive.

The driver should be charged with murder.Killing someone with an automobile should be looked at the same as someone killing with a gun.
