Register to use school online prepaid meals plan

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY Families who use the school district's online prepaid meal program, MealpayPlus, need to reregister after Tuesday because of changes to the system. The changes include new features and upgraded security. Among other things, parents will be able to get more detailed information about their child's account and will have more flexibility about designating the use of money in the account. Another new feature is the toll-free parent support center at1-877-237-0946, which lets parents call with questions or problems. Log on to www.mealpayplus.com to reregister or find more information. Boards, councils asking for volunteers to serve Want to get involved in local government? Several Hillsborough County boards and councils have openings for 2008. Members serve as volunteers and are appointed. Applicants must be registered voters in Hillsborough County. Nomination forms are available online (www.hillsboroughcounty.org), in the commissioners' reception area on the second floor of the County Center in downtown Tampa or by calling the Boards and Councils Coordinator at 272-5826. On the county Web site, click on County Commission, then Advisory Boards and Committees, and then click on Application Questionnaire for County Appointments. Deadline is Jan. 4 and appointments will be made at board and council meetings in January and February. Boards with openings include the Central Park Community Redevelopment Agency Citizens Advisory Committee; Enterprise Zone Development Agency Board; Family Child Care Home Advisory Board; Gas Board of Adjustment, Appeals and Examiners; Health Council of West Central Florida (District VI); Historic Resources Review Board; Hospital Authority; Mechanical Board of Adjustment, Appeals and Examiners; Plumbing Board of Adjustment, Appeals and Examiners; and the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority. BRANDON Center offers lessons for young musicians Musicians 4 and up can hone their skills with several programs and classes at Music Showcase. Music Showcase offers private and group lessons in voice and all instruments, as well as musical theater for four age groups. VALRICO Baseball marathon to raise funds for charity Take yourself out to the ball game, and raise money for a good cause, at the Bullets Baseball organization's fourth annual baseball marathon on Jan. 5. The event takes place at Bloomingdale Little League, 2215 Bloomingdale Ave. The first pitch is at 9 a.m. and a minimum of 100 innings will be played. All proceeds will be donated to the Greater Brandon Community Foundation Inc., a nonprofit organization that administers funding and resources for local charities. Each youth player will solicit donations for the event. The Bullets raised more than $13,000 last year, $12,000 in 2005. The Bullets Baseball organization consists of 13 baseball teams for players ages8 to 18. The group currently has tryouts for its 11-and-under team. PLANT CITY Medard park sports a new, safer playground A new playground at Edward Medard Regional Park is ready for action. Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation spent $83,000 to remove and replaceoutdated equipment and make the park more handicapped-accessible. The old playground was torn down and replaced with two modern play structures,one geared toward kids ages 2 to 5,and one for kids 5 to 12. The new areas include a mulch safety surface, two swing seats, a 13-foot climbing wall and a large sandbox. The renovation was part of an overall facelift at the park. The project included improvements to the parking lot, boat ramps and docks. Medard Park is at 5737 Turkey Creek Road. SUN CITY CENTER Support group to host discussion on strokes Caregivers, friends and anyone interested in stroke issues and stroke prevention are invited to the Sun City Center Stroke Support Group. The organization meets at 1 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month in the East/West room at Kings Point Clubhouse. Next week's meeting features Larry Johnson, director of imaging services at South Bay Hospital, who will discuss diagnostic tests such as MRIs and CAT scans. Call 633-9366 for information.
