  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Dancing through 2007 Amy Scherzer's Diary

How do you know when a gala is a success? When the guests flock to the dance floor and don't want the music to ever stop. Any chairwoman worth her tiara will tell you, steaks gotta sizzle, decorations must dazzle, but if donors aren't dancing, they're not having a ball.

This year, Huey Lewis and the News rocked Moffitt Cancer Institute's annual Magnolia Ball. Rick Springfield brought the DeBartolo Family Foundation's fifth annual All Star Charity bash to its feet. Full Circle howled for Lowry Park Zoo's Karamu. The Cactus Creek Band had Cattle Barons two-steppin' for the American Cancer Society. K.C. and the Sunshine Band got pirates to get down and boogie.

Cancer survivors danced down Saks Fifth Avenue's runway in high style. Dads and granddads waltzed with their darling debutantes. Local celebrities hoofed like ballroom pros in the Spring's very own version of Dancing with the Stars.

You twisted the night away for the American Red Cross' Dance the Night Away; tangoed at University Community Hospital's Starlight Ball and discoed at Tampa General's Studio TGH bash.

So, a toast to you all, readers and dancers who don't miss a beat. Best wishes, good cheer and a happy new year! Now go polish your dancing shoes for a great '08.
