VFW, Women's group celebrate new post home

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10209 and the Ladies Auxiliary will host a grand opening celebration Jan. 12 at the new post home at 14736 Edward R. Noll Drive, off Anderson Snow Road. The opening ceremony will be at 11 a.m., followed by entertainment with Frank Dee's New York Orchestra from noon to 2 p.m. There will be continuous entertainment through the evening. Kids, sign up today for chess tourney
Today is the deadline to register for the Christmas chess tournament, which will be from 10:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Brooksville Church of the Nazarene, 19384 Ingram St. The tournament is provided by Championship Chess, a national chess teaching organization, and is open to youths in first through seventh grades. Get your landscape into better shape
A training series, "Four Weeks to a Better Landscape," will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to noon Thursdays, Feb. 7-28, at the Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service, 19490 Oliver St. The training series will be provided by urban horticulture agent Jim Moll. Participants will gain practical knowledge about proper care for their landscape by learning about insects, pesticides, pruning, fertilization, lawn care and citrus. The cost is $20. Space is limited. Registration will close and payment is required by Feb. 1. Call 754-4433.

Elks scholarship is available
High school seniors can receive applications for the Most Valuable Student Scholarship offered by the Elks National Foundation. Also, applications are being taken for the Legacy Awards for children and grandchildren also stepgrandchildren and legal wards of Elks in good standing on or before April 1, 2005. Get applications at any Elks lodge or online at www.elks.org/enf/scholars/mvs.cfm. All applications must be returned to the nearest Elks lodge by Jan. 11.
