Hot reads
NFL Network likely losing this battle
The NFL clearly overestimated the value of its NFL Network. In its fourth year, the NFL Network remains largely unavailable through the country's major cable providers, primarily Time Warner and Comcast, who refused to pass along a charge of 70 cents per household to subscribers. The league's decision to simulcast Saturday night's historic Patriots-Giants game on NBC and CBS, rather than air it exclusively on the NFL Network, is a strong indication the cable companies will win this battle.
Cowboys smartto retain Glenn
Some could question the Cowboys for using a valuable spot on their 53-man roster all season for injured wide receiverTerry Glenn. The 12-year veteran practiced Wednesday for the first time since undergoing two arthroscopic knee surgeries and will make his debut today against the Redskins. Glenn's return coincides with the loss of wide receiverTerrell Owens to a high ankle sprain. With Owens' status uncertain for the playoffs, the NFC's top seed could use another playmaker.
Parcells makes immediate impact
Bill Parcells, above, the Dolphins' newly inked executive vice president of football operations, attended his first practice Thursday. He has yet to say whether he will retain general manager Randy Mueller or coach Cam Cameron, all the while insisting he does not want either job. But his presence made an immediate impact. According to linebackerJoey Porter, the players ran a little faster and the coaches coached a little louder. Really, how is the football-addicted Parcells going to stay in his office?
Who's hot
Coach Bill Belichicke_SFlbPatriots
He is the NFL's favorite villain, but let's hear it for a coach who's willing to play his starters in Week 17 for a shot at history. There's a Super Bowl winner every season, but they'll talk about New England for the rest of time if it becomes the first 19-0 champion.
Who's cold
Coach Eric Manginie_SFlbJets
A year ago, Mangini was a boy genius for taking the Jets to the playoffs as a rookie coach. Suddenly, the former Belichick assistant has a huge rebuilding job on his hands.
