If gems, jewelry, beads and fossils are your thing, then the Coliseum is the place to be for next weekend's showcase of unique collectors items sure to pique your interest.

More than 40 dealers from across the county lay out tables of items that range from rare minerals and crystals to giant sharkteeth and fossils to just admire or purchase.

"You're not going to find the Hope Diamond here" said Frank Cox, who has been organizing the shows throughout the area since 1970. "You can choose from many unique stones and settings they can be set in to create a piece of jewelry to your taste," he said.

The items in the show are popular with collectors and individuals wanting to be creative. Bead vendors sell findings and provide videos and tips on learning how to do it yourself.

Often people bring in rocks or fossils they have dug up for identification but legal appraisals are not provided. Much of what is available at the show are collectible items and people are not encouraged to bring in their heirlooms in hopes of finding out their worth.

"The jewelry business is a gentleman's business," Cox said. "A lot of business is done on a handshake and good word. ... We police each other to make sure that what is sold at the show is represented accurately."

The vendors travel the country attending shows, but local groups are available to help those interested in the hobby to learn about cutting, finishing and displaying their finds.
