Thankful, hopeful as new year dawns

The Hmong people, natives of Southeast Asia, celebrated the new year the weekend of Dec. 22 at the England Brothers Bandshell in Pinellas Park. It's a thankful time, marking the end of the harvest season, and is the Hmong's most revered holiday. They follow the lunar calendar, which puts their new year celebration around the time of the American Thanksgiving holiday, but it's easier for business owners and others to take time off around Christmas, so the local celebration is held the weekend before Christmas. The holiday included traditional foods, culture shows and a beauty pageant.
