Today's Letters: What is planned for city marina?
Letters to the Editor
Published December 30, 2007
There has been a lot of banter back and forth about where to locate a parking garage on Clearwater Beach. It seems to most that the best site would be at the city marina as you enter the beach. The city had said it didn't like that site because a garage there would block the beach view. Then they said they were considering building the garage on the beach. This implies that they already have a use in mind for the marina site, since blocking the view really wasn't the issue. Let's hear from the city just what their plans are for the marina site. It probably would make sense for the city to sell the marina to an experienced operator, as they have not done well with their operation of this facility. Dick Groff,Clearwater Re: Pack of greyhounds attacks man, small dogsDec. 21, story Blame lies with racing industry My heart goes out to all the parties involved, as they are all hurting. It's obvious that the owner of the dead dog loved his dog. It is equally obvious that the owners of the offending dogs love them, as they are rescues from a nefarious industry. Unfortunately, even though in Florida it is illegal to train greyhounds on live animals, many are trained on kittens and rabbits out of sight and out of the state. In this case, the greyhound racing industry is guilty of programing these dogs to chase small animals, especially if they are jumping around. The industry cooperates with adoption groups because of the bad publicity they got when they disposed of "retired" or slow runner dogs in horrific ways. This is a tragedy for all involved, including the dogs. Passions are high now, but I hope cool heads will prevail with humane solutions. Marilyn Weaver,Tarpon Springs Re: Clearwater shops balk at strict rules for signs Dec. 18, editorial Downtown needs more eye appeal According to the article, there was a problem with the gold awning that Jamba Juice wished to install on its stop downtown. It apparently goes against the downtown's design guidelines. What guidelines? Businesses that are unattractive have already set up shop there. Why crack down on Jamba Juice, which is trying to look attractive? If anything, downtown should take its cue from Jamba Juice. The downtown area needs eye appeal if it is to be successful.
