How long has there been a New Year's Eve party in Times Square in New York City? This is the 100th year celebrating the New Year with a gathering in Times Square. In all but two exceptions being 1942 and 1943, for wartime dimouts in the city there has been a ball lowered in the countdown. In 1907, the ball was made of iron and wood, and weighed 700 pounds. In 1955, an aluminum ball weighing 150 pounds debuted. This year, LED technology will be used, providing twice the illumination with 672 crystal triangles. Compiled from Times and wire reports.
