NEW YORK

The Times Square New Year's Eve ball, above, is celebrating its centennial by going green: The star of the world-famous holiday extravaganza was revamped this year with 9,576 energy-efficient bulbs that use about the same amount of electricity as 10 toasters. Philips Lighting, which created the LED bulbs, says they are more than twice as bright as last year's lights.

Also this year, wishes from people around the world will be included among the confetti dropped when the clock strikes midnight. For the first time, people can write wishes for the New Year on the multicolored confetti by visiting the Times Square Information Center or by typing a message on a "virtual wishing wall" online at tinyurl.com/2c5efd.

Rescue helicopter crash kills three

A helicopter conducting an aerial search for a missing hunter crashed in thick woods early Sunday, killing all three people on board moments after they had found the man.

The cause of the crash was under investigation, said Jeff Davis, a manager of Air Evac EMS of West Plains, Mo., the company that owns the aircraft.

The helicopter crew had spotted the hunter, and the crash occurred as the aircraft was hovering over him, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The hunter was eventually rescued from the Freedom Hills Wildlife Management Area, a 31,572-acre state hunting preserve.

Emergency officials identified the victims as pilot Michael Baker and crew members Allan Bragwell and Tiffany Miles.
