When did the NFL start using instant replay?

The NFL first approved limited use of instant replay for the 1986-87 season. At that time, all replays were initiated by officials. In 1992 owners decided they didn't like the system and voted to end it, which is where things stood until 1999, when it was reinstituted in its current form. Coaches may make two challenges a game to certain calls by officials. In 2004, coaches were allowed a third challenge if their first two were successful.
