Know how to take the helm 'just in case'

The Clearwater Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering a "suddenly in command" course at 8 a.m. Jan. 19 at the Clearwater Community Sailing Center at 1001 Gulf Blvd., on Sand Key.

The course is designed to teach passengers what they need to know if the skipper of their boat got sick, was hurt or fell overboard. The cost is $25. Call 469-8895.

Dunedin's Coast Guard Auxiliary, at 51 Main St., is offering:

- A suddenly in command course 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 27. The cost is $20.

- A safe boating course from 1 to 5 p.m. Jan. 12 and 13. Registration is Monday, and the cost is $30.

- A comprehensive course 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays from Feb. 11 to March 3. Registration is 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 6. The cost is $50.

School Board meets on Tuesday

The Pinellas County School Board will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the district administration building, 301 Fourth St. SW.

The public is invited to attend. Anyone wishing to speak on either agenda or nonagenda items can do so by filling out a form at or before the meeting.

Residents may speak about any item on the agenda not involving a hearing on employee discipline by registering five minutes before the item is introduced. The meeting will be televised at 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, for two weeks following the meeting date.

EAST LAKE

Explore preserve on guided hikes

Free, guided hikes through the Brooker Creek Preserve Education Center trail are from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, as well as Jan. 12, 19 and 26.

During the three-quarter-mile walk, guides will show how the land has changed over time and discuss the ecological footprints left by the changes.

Hikers should wear sturdy closed-toe shoes and a hat and bring water. Preregistration is required and can be done by calling (727) 453-6800. The center is at 3940 Keystone Road.
