Unlucky in Kentucky
Nature Coast's girls basketball team traveled to Kentucky searching for a challenge. The Sharks found more than they could handle, losing three straight during the Lexington Catholic Holiday Classic, a tournament that featured some of the top talent in the Bluegrass State.
"It's a just another world of basketball in Kentucky," Nature Coast coach Travis Lamle said.
Lamle said Nature Coast got scouting reports on all three Kentucky teams, but no preparation could have stopped a bona fide Division I post player, an opponent that could match the Sharks' transition game and one more group filled with 3-point specialists.
"We were pretty well conditioned for around here," Lamle said. "We ran into a team that was willing to run with us. The fundamentals those kids get at an early age is glaringly obvious."
The Sharks took a four-day break for Christmas and resumed practice last week.
"They looked really good in practice," Lamle said. "Five years ago when our first-year team went to Kentucky they came back and refocused. We've had four really good days at practice."
The Sharks are 13-3 entering tonight's game against St. Petersburg Catholic at the Indian Rocks Christian Holiday Tournament. The Sharks began the season 12-0, the best start in school history.
Alumni night
Central will host its varsity basketball alumni night Friday for a game against Springstead. Former players and fans are encouraged to attend. The game tips off at 7:30 with players slated to be introduced at halftime.
