The 551-pound catch was a dock record and it took Aidan Murray Medley, 12, almost an hour to pull in the shark.

Twelve-year-old Aidan Medley started the new year with the catch of his life: a 551-pound bull shark. The Connecticut boy was fishing on the charter boat Thumper, just north of the Palm Beach Inlet, on New Year's Day when he hooked the record-breaking shark, the Palm Beach Post reports. "When you have a shark on the line, it's completely painful," said Aidan, who said he lost feeling in his body after about 20 minutes of having the shark on his line. Aidan weighs just 120 pounds. First mate Roy Rice said Aidan, who has been casting lines since age 5, reeled in the fish on his own. The last record shark catch was a 517-pounder at Panama City Beach in 1981. But it still may have been smaller than a bull shark that two Pinellas men landed June 2 while fishing from the back yard of a Venetian Isles home. Cousins Ed and Frank Maloney said they measured their shark at 8 feet 10 inches. They didn't have a scale, but estimated its weight at 650 to 700 pounds. It was never officially weighed.

My only hope (and that of the dwindling shark populations) is that he may be sent to Iraq when he gets older.

Congrts. young man, a fine catch. So few people understand that when fishing as in hunting and game conervation some animals must die.Face it people it is a fact of life. Son, BE PROUD, of what you have acomplished. Good fishing!

Folks please, what on earth does a Bull Shark do other than eat other beautiful fish and people if it could. Two things the world certainly could do without..... one is Bull sharks and the other is alligators! Hate em both!

Oh my god people do you think if that shark had the choice to eat you or just take a picture with you it would choose to take a pic with you. Hell no, i live in florida and i always hear of shark attacks, this is one less shark to worry about.

What a bunch of bleeding hearts... the only good bull shark is a dead bull shark. They are the most dangerous sharks in our waters. Let your 13 year old son lose a limb to a bull shark, and see how you like them.

It is a very sad thing that such a rare thing as a shark that size was killed. They should have measured it, taken a few pics and let it go.

Great job Captain and Mate. Teaching your dying tradition of fish killing vs catch and release to a 12 year old.

This kid killed an innocent animal who was only trying to survive. The kid said he did it for revenge. Nice.

Poor shark.. Catch and release is one thing, but when you are killing an animal of such beauty you should be ashamed
