Inmate killed after escaping from hospital

LAUREL, Md.

An inmate who escaped from a hospital Wednesday was cornered hours later in a cemetery by police and killed in a shootout, authorities said. Kelvin Poke, 45, was in leg shackles when he overpowered guards at Laurel Regional Hospital, authorities said. The driver of one of two getaway cars that Poke stole was shot in the head but was expected to survive. Poke was serving life plus 40 years for kidnapping, carjacking and robbery. He was hospitalized for chest pains.

Democrat won't seek re-election

Rep. Tom Lantos, D-Calif., said Wednesday that he will not seek re-election this year because he has cancer of the esophagus. Lantos, 79, is the only Holocaust survivor elected to Congress and is known for his dedication to human rights issues. He is serving his 14th term, after joining the House in 1981.

Burns dropped from investigation

Former Sen. Conrad Burns is no longer part of a federal investigation of jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff, the Justice Department said Wednesday. The Republican narrowly lost re-election in 2006 in Montana over his relationship with Abramoff, the key figure in a corruption case.
