Class on using credit cards wisely

SPRING HILL/BROOKSVILLE
Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service will offer a free one-hour class, Credit Card Awareness, on the following days:
- 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at the Extension office, 19490 Oliver St., Brooksville.
- 7 to 8 p.m. Jan. 15, at the Extension's satellite office in the Forest Oaks Government Center, 7479 Forest Oaks Blvd., Spring Hill.

Head Start program is accepting applications
Mid-Florida Community Services' Head Start Early Childhood Development Pre-School Program is still accepting applications for enrollment for the current school year.
The program is for children who were 3 or 4 years old as of Sept. 1, 2007. Head Start also serves children with special needs (disabilities) and is a Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) provider.
This is a federally funded, income-eligible program. The following items are needed at time of application:
- Birth certificate (proof of guardianship/custody if applicable)
- Proof of residency
- Proof of income for the last 12 months or prior calendar year (whichever is applicable, including current check stubs (bi-weekly or four weekly), W-2 form; WAGES/TANF/SSI letter, statement of earnings from employer, unemployment verification, notarized statement of earnings, Form 1099, child support and other forms of income.
- Documentation of child's disability (if applicable).
Applications for enrollment are accepted from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, or by appointment, at the following locations:
- Head Start R.R. Moton Early Intervention Center, 835 School St., Brooksville. Call 754-2464.

Bloodmobile comingto Big Lots parking lot
Big Lots will team up with LifeSouth Community Blood Center to host a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 15, when the LifeSouth bloodmobile will be in the Big Lots parking lot, 2384 Commercial Way.
All blood donors will receive a recognition gift item and a complimentary cholesterol screening.

Cooperative Extension to offer free classes
The Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service will offer the following free classes at its Spring Hill office in the Forest Oaks Government Center, 7479 Forest Oaks Blvd.:
- Caring for Cold-Damaged Plants, Tuesday
- Landscaping for Wildlife, Jan. 15
- A Bounty of Blooming Bulbs, Jan. 22
- It's Easy Being Green, Jan. 29
All classes start at 10 a.m. No registration is needed, but seating is limited.
The following free classes will be offered at the extension office at 19490 Oliver St., Brooksville:
- Easy to Grow Trees, Jan. 12
- Easy Home Composting, Jan. 26

BROOKSVILLE
Elks Lodge holdingits Elks Idol Contest
Brooksville Elks Lodge 2582 will host its second annual Elks Idol Contest starting Jan. 12, when contestants can pick a song for the competition.
On Jan. 19, contestants must sing a country song. The finale will be on Jan. 26, when songs from the 1950s through '70s are to be sung. Music will be provided by Mr. Lynn. Prizes will be awarded and snacks provided.
Judges will be on hand, but the deciding vote will be by paper ballot, which will be passed out among lounge patrons.
Those wishing to enter the contest must sign up in the lounge at the lodge, 14494 Cortez Blvd. The contest is open to Elk members and guests.

BROOKSVILLE
All-breed dog showcoming to Classic Park
The 2008 Florida Classic Clusters AKC All-Breed Dog Show will be Jan. 10-14 and Jan. 16-20 at Florida Classic Park, 5360 Lockhart Road, off Cortez Boulevard, east of Brooksville.
The show is presented by the Clearwater Kennel Club, Inverness Florida Kennel Club, Manatee Kennel Club, Pasco Florida Kennel Club and Tampa Bay Kennel Club.
Visitors will have a chance to go behind the scenes and learn how a dog is judged and meet dog handlers.
The event will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Admission is free, but there is a $5 per vehicle parking fee.
The event will also include pet rescues on hand showcasing adoptable pets and an array of vendors.
Pet owners will be invited to bring their pets to the Doggie Fun Zone, a multi-dimensional lure course. No previous experience is needed for dogs to participate. Admission to the Doggie Fun Zone is $10.
Pets participating in the fun zone will not be permitted inside the official AKC show grounds.
The Florida Classic Clusters is the largest American Kennel Club dog show in Florida.

Fabulous Hubcaps willreprise '50s, '60s music
The Fabulous Hubcaps will perform at 7 p.m. Jan. 11 at the Hernando Performing Arts Center at Hernando High School, 700 Bell Ave. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
The Fabulous Hubcaps are a seven-member group that will bring the audience back to the 1950s and '60s with a repertoire of doo-wop harmony, classic rock 'n' roll, Motown and R&B music.
