Time to register for gasparilla's annual pageant

SPRING HILL
Registration will be conducted locally for the annual Gasparilla Pageant that will be Jan. 13 at the Westin Harbour Island in Tampa. The registration session will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Perkins Restaurant, 4685 Commercial Way. The event, starting at 4 p.m., will crown Miss Gasparilla, Miss Teen Gasparilla and Mrs. Gasparilla. A separate pageant for children will be at 11:30 a.m. Gasparilla Pageant 2008 is a benefit for Locks of Love, a national charity that provides custom-fitted wigs for children suffering hair loss from cancer and other causes. Cats, kittens are ready for adoption
Home at Last Pet Adoptions will have cats and kittens available for adoption from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. today at Petco, 7223 Coastal Blvd., off Cortez Boulevard. There will be a variety of cats of all ages available. All pets have been spayed or neutered, have age-appropriate vaccinations, have tested negative for feline leukemia and AIDS, have an identity microchip and have been treated for parasites. Group will hold antiwar gathering
The NatureCoast Coalition for Peace and Justice will conduct an antiwar demonstration from 10 to 11:30 a.m. today at the southeast corner of Cortez Boulevard and Commercial Way (in front of CVS).

Sign up for food course, safety test
Monday is the deadline to sign up for the food managers certification course and ServSafe certification test, which will be offered Jan. 14 at the Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service, 19490 Oliver St. Training and the exam are $100; the manual is $40. Training will be from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., followed by the exam. Certification is required in Florida for food managers of all establishments licensed by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and selected licenses of the Health Department.
