Captain's Corner
By BILL HARDMAN, Times Correspondent

What's hot: Divers are having success finding concentrations of hogfish, amberjacks and cobia on the ledges, rocks and wrecks in less than 100 feet. Hogfish are plentiful and bigger than usual. Some that my divers speared this week were in the 6- to 7-pound range. The visibility was about 30 feet. Cobia and amberjack are being fished and speared on the wrecks. The bottom temperature was 70 degrees, warm for this time of year. The bigger amberjacks have not moved into shallower water in force, but the warmer water has kept the cobia in our area. Tip: We were diving in one-piece, 3-millimeter suits without hoods or beanies. Take more thermal protection. If it gets colder, it is better to be able to add more protection for your subsequent dives.
