The annual Miss Kumquat Festival Scholarship Pageant is slated for 7 p.m., Jan. 19, at Pasco Middle School auditorium.
Hosted by Starrz of Tomorrow, a not-for-profit organization, the pageant is designed to enhance the higher education goals of young women in the local community.
The Miss Kumquat and Miss Dade City pageant is affiliated with the Miss Florida and Miss America Scholarship pageants. The Miss America Scholarship pageant is one of the leading scholarship organizations for young women in the country.
There are four phases of competition in which each contestant must compete. A private interview allows a panel of five judges to hear personally from each contestant, learn about the contestant's community platform issue and what the contestant plans to do during her year of reign if selected as winner of the pageant.
The Lifestyle and Physical Fitness in Swimwear phase is designed to see how well each contestant maintains a lifestyle of good physical health and overall presence and confidence on stage.
The third phase of the competition, the talent portion, is a two minute presentation of a talent chosen by the contestant, showcasing the individual's ability at preparedness and overall talent ability.
The last phase of competition is the Evening Wear and is designed for judges to assess each contestant's poise, grace and commanding stage presence.
Winners of the Miss Kumquat and Miss Dade City pageants will claim many prizes including $500 cash scholarships and the opportunity to participate for the title of Miss Florida during the summer in St. Petersburg.
The pageant is open to young women ages 17 (high school seniors) to 24. The Miss Kumquat Pageant is for young women in Pasco, Polk, Hernando, Hillsborough, Sumter and Pinellas counties. The Miss Dade City pageant is for young women living in Pasco County.
Prior to the Miss Kumquat Festival Pageant there will be a Little Miss Kumquat Festival Pageant for young girls ages 1-17. This pageant with two categories, back to school/casual wear and evening wear, has a $50 entry fee and the deadline to enter is Saturday. The pageant will be at 1 p.m., Jan. 19 at Pasco Middle School.
