The Pinellas County Commission took another step Tuesday toward bringing reclaimed water to Palm Harbor residents.

Reclaimed water is sewer water treated so that it's safe to use for irrigation. The commission awarded a nearly $1.5-million contract to a New York company that will lay 8 miles of reclaimed water lines in east Palm Harbor.

The new lines will provide reclaimed service to those in an area bounded by Belcher Road to the east, Alderman Road to the north, U.S. 19 to the west and County Road 39 to the south.

The project is one of nine the county has undertaken to bring reclaimed water to all of Palm Harbor. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The county charges a $7 a month availability fee to each property the new lines pass by. The fee will be assessed for 30 years to pay the project cost.

To hook up to the line and take advantage of reclaimed water, homeowners must pay an additional $2 a month. For more information, call the county's reclaimed water hotline at 727 464-4273.
