Two families lost sons in crash

An aspiring actor and a father were killed when one's motorcycle collided with the other's SUV.

Jack R. Taschereau, 46, was a fisherman and coin collector. He was driving the sports utility vehicle in the crash.

Craig M. Hales, 22, a graduate of East Lake High School in 2004, was driving the motorcycle.

PALM HARBOR - One was a hard-luck crabber looking for rare coins on his day off.

The other was a young man with a suspended license riding the motorcycle his family hated.

The lives of Jack R. Taschereau, 46, and Craig M. Hales, 22, intersected Monday in Palm Harbor, when Hales' bike rammed Taschereau's sports utility vehicle.

Their vehicles flipped and fell to the ground in a fireball that shut down northbound U.S. 19 for more than three hours.

The Florida Highway Patrol has not released the names of the victims, but the families of both men said Tuesday that troopers have told them to expect the worst. And Hales' family said they were heartsick that two families had lost sons.

In the hours before the crash, Taschereau was engaging in his favorite pastime: coin collecting.

A massive heart attack last year forced the crabber to take some time off, which led to a rebirth of his fascination with rare coins.

Since then, he'd worked out deals with local bank tellers to hold any interesting pieces they came across. Every week or so, like the good fisherman he was, Taschereau would make a circuit of banks, checking the traps.

The Palm Harbor resident was driving between banks when he made the fateful U-turn.

Jo Ann Ames, Taschereau's mother, heard the bad news Monday night when authorities came to her door. The intensity of the crash left little to identify the driver, but a few scraps of paper in the SUV led them to her.

She told authorities about his medical history. They said it would take a little while to get complete confirmation.

Then the medical examiner mentioned something unusual, Ames said. He said there were a bunch of half dollars in the victim's pocket.

Ames knew it was her son.

He left behind an 11-year-old boy, Joshua, who lives with his mother in New Port Richey. Father and son loved fishing and chess and arguing about NASCAR.

It was a wrenching conclusion to a tortured 45 years.

"It'd be different if he had a good, prosperous life and all, but he struggled his whole life," Ames said. Small problems always lingered and festered until they became big ones.

At 19, Taschereau was thrown from his motorcycle by a driver running a red light. A quarter century later, his leg still hurt so much from the crash that he had to wear flip-flops everywhere.

Three years ago, Taschereau was anchored in the gulf when a shrimping vessel plowed into his boat. He almost sank.

The heart attack last year left him physically diminished. He couldn't pull the traps up by hand anymore so he joined with a friend, Sam Hart, and they worked Hart's boat together, the Crabby Cracker.

"You couldn't find a man who worked harder," Hart said. They talked just before the crash Monday. Taschereau had some errands to run then he was going to help ready the boat.

But Taschereau never showed up.

Craig Hales came to the crash scene from another direction.

He was 22, athletic and popular. His parents, Raymond and Tracey Hales, said he was just three days from starting firefighter training.

Hales' dream was to become an actor in Hollywood. He took acting classes in Orlando and had been an extra in a handful of movies.

Getting in shape for the fire academy, however, was Hales' immediate goal.

He started Monday with a protein shake. Then he told his father he was going to the gym, just a few miles up U.S. 19 from their Palm Harbor home.

It was the first nice day in a while so Hales drove his green Kawasaki Ninja bike.

Witnesses to the crash said the motorcycle appeared to be traveling faster than 100 mph, authorities said.

Raymond Hales said the family is devastated not only by the loss of their son but by the pain the crash caused for the Taschereau family. He said his son had a problem with speeding but was otherwise a sensible man and a very good person.

"When they're that young they feel invincible, that's the shame of it," Hales said. "We used to hate him having that bike for this reason."

The family moved from England 18 years ago and had been living in Palm Harbor for the past six years. Hales graduated from East Lake High School in 2004. He earned money working as a valet at Ruth Eckerd Hall.

Besides his parents, he lived with his sister Rachael, 19, and a brother Charlie, 14. He had each family member's name tattooed on his body, along with the three lions of the English national soccer team's crest.

State driving records show Hales has been ticketed five times since 2003 for speeding or reckless driving. His driver's license had been suspended since July for failing to appear in court on a Pinellas ticket.

"He was such a good kid," Raymond Hales said of his son. "I didn't want it to seem like he was reckless."

Times researchers Caryn Baird and Carolyn Edds contributed to this report.

... and another thing -- there's a difference between "speeding" and stunts like this. Of course people speed, but there seems to be an inordinate amount of kids on crotch-rockets who do it excessively. People make mistakes, but this was avoidable.

At what point did anyone say the U-turn was illegal? They AREN'T illegal in most places, like some of you are claiming, and if they are, there are usually signs informing drivers of such. The fault is with the reckless kid doing 100 MPH...
by warren 01/25/08 11:46 AM
the parents are not at fault for a man of 22. the courts should have put biker in jail after 3 repeat speedings.u- turns are legal unless posted. over 100 mph?he did not pull in front. parents will suffer more than all.live and learn some just live.
by LD 01/22/08 10:39 PM
When a 22 year old makes a decision to drive 100 MPH i do not see where the father is at fault? It was a bad choice but one we all make evryday when we drive over the speed limit. move on
by Chopper65 01/19/08 03:18 PM
Accident? No License no driving,U- turns in most places are illegal. You get on a bike or behind the wheel you take a risk.If the laws where obeyed this Accident? would not of happened.
by AC 01/16/08 11:56 PM
why do you people have to be so judgemental? yes Craig did wrong and should not have been speeding but it was an ACCIDENT!he was a very good friend of mine and was not a bad kid at all. show some understanding people. what if it was ur kid?
by CB 01/13/08 10:16 AM
No one is making the life of either family easier by calling the motorcycle driver stupid. You're causing more pain for the family of the SUV driver.. Give it a rest.
by Joan 01/12/08 10:10 PM
This could have been avoided if this man's "friends" had called the law. Seems to me a lot of people knew he made of habit driving without a license and doing wheelie's at 90 MPH

Everyone has their own opinions that they are entitled to however this is a very sad time for the families and everyone needs to be sympathetic
by the 01/12/08 01:51 AM
damn 2 people just died. one 22 and u people are fighting about stupid stuff let it go and let this people rest and there families everyone makes mistakes ! what no one has ever speed ? or made a u turn. ??
by abraham 01/11/08 10:25 PM
Dont be stupid about this cuz it was a A-C-C-I-D-E-N-T!!Are you saying that u have never made a bad decision??You can say stuff about somebody that u dont know so get over urselfs and get off of ur high and mighty pedistools!IT WAS AN A-C-C-I-D-E-N-T
by SE 01/11/08 02:00 PM
I'm not sure who 04ZRX is, but he doesn't know what he's talking about, U-Turns are perfectly leagal in Florida. He was trying to get to the bank to look at coins when a teen who felt invincible blind sided him. It's truely tragic, have sympathy!!
by Donna 01/11/08 01:45 PM
So that it is clear to everyone. It is legal to make a u-turn where the driver made one. He was not in fault of any kind.
by Bobby 01/11/08 11:03 AM
Man in pickup truck pulled in front of Motorbike. Motorbike should not be speeding. SUV also should not explode. Cheezy gas tank ready for side impact explosion. Fire must have killed driver of truck.
by LB 01/11/08 05:09 AM
POPS let him on the bike!!!!!! dont judge the parents like you guys are, did they know about the ban, did they know about him speeding???? Please Please give the parents of Craig a break. Rest in Peace Craig
by Chris 01/11/08 02:32 AM
it's sad that the kids very poor decisions had to bring such tragedy to both famillies, but the law is there for a reason, to stop these accidents from happening. That kid shouldn't have been on the road. RIDE RESPONSIBLY PEOPLE. RIP.
by RIP Craig 01/10/08 08:50 PM
it amazes me how much people have to say about someone they dont even know, someone who is now dead- yes he was at fault but if you think you can judge the LIFE of someone you dont know by his driving record, i hope people arent so quick to judge you
by kayla 01/10/08 07:06 PM
you all are stupid these familys bolth lost someone and all you can say is aww he was so stupid for speeding ya he had a suspended licence but have you all never gone over the speed limit?? yea thats what i thought! stop saying such rude things!
by Hoss 01/10/08 03:35 PM
Very, Very sad. It was not "Death by Kawasaki" - it was not the bikes fault - it was the "good" kid riding it who was doing 100 with a suspended license. The SUV is to blame also for a U turn in front of him, but it is hard to see a bike at 100MPH
by Linda 01/10/08 03:02 PM
The father allowed his son to get on a vhicle knowing the son did not have a license...he should have called the law and turned him in and saved two lives.
by JK 01/10/08 12:12 PM
He made a bad decision. Sorry people he made bad decision after bad decision. He broke several laws. Now what's the definition of reckless? Yeah, that's it.
by james 01/10/08 11:22 AM
Suspended license and going 100 mph - that is not a good kid, and parents are no better for allowing it to happen. Reckless is not the word. Just wait for the attorney's letter and you can kiss all you have worked for bye bye
by TV 01/10/08 10:46 AM
According to the guys at Tire Kingdom the same green motorcycle had been speeding down 19 every day for months! A SUSPENDED LICENSE HAPPENED FOR A REASON SENSELESS JACKASS!
by John 01/10/08 09:56 AM
I'm pretty sure that the ppl who r calling Hales a good kid, r his friends or relatives. If it was the other way round (Taschereau on the bike with 5 tix and a suspended DL, & Hales in the SUV), then u ppl would have cursed the crap out of Taschereau
by jeff 01/10/08 09:35 AM
I never made a mistake that cost another man his life.
by CB 01/10/08 09:33 AM
If the law was we could shoot anyone speeding, then 3/4 of the world would be dead.
by Doc 01/10/08 09:07 AM
You should be ashamed of yourselves. The family is NOT to blame. Craig Hales made a poor decision. Lets learn from this and try to educate not condemn. Are U-turns legal in Florida? Godspeed and my toughts are with BOTH families. Ride safe.
by Dusty 01/10/08 07:34 AM
I myself had a sports bike and the urge to rev it up on roads was too tempting, hence why I knew that I had to get rid of it. Part blame should be on the world we live in, films , TV glamorizing speed. Young people think they can get away with it.
by Dusty 01/10/08 07:25 AM
This is a very sad time. The only way we can stop these things from happening in the future is by making the law harder! If you get stopped for speeding your vehicle should be taken away, if you get caught again prison. it's the only way it can work
by L 01/10/08 05:53 AM
Of course a tragedy and ppls reactions here are a joke! You are forgetting the other guy was making an illegal u turn, yes there was blame on craigs side however clearly there was blame on both.drop it out n have sum respect for the families
by 04ZRX 01/10/08 05:10 AM
Very sad that two people lost their lives. Both people are at fault though, Biker for the speed & no license & the person in the SUV for pulling a U-Turn.
by barry 01/10/08 03:26 AM
dont speak ill of the dead,we dont here in england RIP craig
by Chuck 01/10/08 12:30 AM
It's russian roulette with a bike. Five tickets were the first five bullets. On the sixth he took an innocent with him. Stop risking everyone else's lives for your selfish thrills. Wish I could've killed him first, before he took the life of another.
by Terry 01/09/08 11:30 PM
Nothing will change tomorrow. Red lights will be run, cars/bikes will speed. None of 'em care. Be afraid, very afraid. The only good thing is that this young moron likely didn't get the chance to breed. His callous stupidity ends with his death.
by .... 01/09/08 10:57 PM
Craig wasn't very smart in speeding or driving with a suspended liscense but this was an ACCIDENT. No one is perfect people make mistakes. He wasn't wreckless in hislife just in this decision! My sympathy for both families, this was a terrible ACCIDENT
