TALLAHASSEE - School districts could have separate schools or classes for boys and girls, under a bill unanimously approved Wednesday by a Senate committee.

Some districts already have single-gender classes but other districts have prohibited them because current state law neither denies nor allows them. The bill would clear up that ambiguity.

The measure is sponsored by Sen. Stephen Wise, a former elementary school teacher, who said it recognizes differences between the way boys and girls learn.

"The boys like to punch each other and push each other, not sit up straight and follow the teacher's orders," the Jacksonville Republican said. "The girls like to please the teacher."
