Dine, dance and raise funds for scholarships
The Sons of Italy, Nature Coast Lodge 2502, will host its annual Scholarship Dinner Dance from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Hernando County Senior Citizens Club, 7925 Rhanbuoy Road.
Tickets are $16. You can bring your own beverages.
All monies raised will go into the scholarship fund and will be distributed to selected graduating Hernando County high school students.

LifeSouth bloodmobile at Big Lots parking lot
Big Lots will team up with LifeSouth Community Blood Center to host a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, when the LifeSouth bloodmobile will be in the Big Lots parking lot, 2384 Commercial Way.
All blood donors will receive a recognition gift item and a complimentary cholesterol screening.

Fundraiser to honor the 'Music Bum'
A tribute to Mark Lokan, the original "Music Bum" will be 1 p.m. Jan. 27 at the Horse & Crown Pub, 5230 Commercial Way, Spring Hill.
Many bands have signed up to perform during the concert fundraiser, including: Prospect, Recoil, Bullwinkle, Sunspot and Nothing in the Dark, with more to be added.
Lokan, 49, passed away Nov. 23. The tribute will benefit his wife, Wendy, and their family. Lokan was a guitar player and lead singer for the bands Dog Leg Left and Soupstone.
He was also the original owner of the Music Bum store in Spring Hill and organized benefits for local bands, called Bumfest.

Sweetheart Coffee is set for Jan. 19
The Brooksville Woman's Club will host the fourth annual Sweetheart Coffee from 3 to 5 p.m. Jan. 19 at the club, 131 S Main St.
Tickets are $5. The event will include coffee flavored to one's choice, finger sandwiches and dessert. Entertainment will be provided by country-western vocalist Kevin Longhorn.

Help in supporting your gifted child
"A Toolkit for Success A Parent's Guide to Advocating for Their Gifted Child" will be at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 23 in the media center at Hernando High School, 700 Bell Ave.
The program is co-sponsored by PAGES of Hernando (Partners Allied for Gifted Education and Support) and the Citrus Organization for the Gifted.
The speaker is Donnajo Smith, director of gifted services for the Florida Department of Education. Topics include: The Educational Plan - Your Rights and Responsibilities; What You Should Expect from Gifted Services; How to Advocate for Your Gifted Child; and Motivating the Gifted Underachiever. There will also be a question and answer session.

Learn your way to a better landscape
A training series, "Four Weeks to a Better Landscape," will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon Thursdays, Feb. 7-28, at the Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service, 19490 Oliver St.
The training series will be provided by Jim Moll, urban horticulture agent. Participants will gain practical knowledge about proper care for their landscape by learning about insects, pesticides, pruning, fertilization, lawn care and citrus.
The cost is $20. Space is limited and registration will be accepted on a first-come, first-paid basis.

Chinsegut programs planned this month
Chinsegut Nature Center will host the following programs and events in January:
- Creating Backyard Wildlife Habitat, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 18. Participants will learn how to create ideal habitat in one's back yard for mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, butterflies, bats and other Florida wildlife.
- Chinsegut Night Hike, 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 25. Participants will listen and look for owls, frogs and other night creatures. Bring a flashlight.
- Map and Compass Class, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 26. Equipment will be provided. Participants will learn now to use a map and compass, as well as learn about geocaching. Class size is limited and registration is required.
All programs are free and at the nature center, 23212 Lake Lindsey Road, north of Brooksville. Seating is limited and reservations are needed. Call 754-6722.
Builders group plans shooting tournament
The Hernando Builders Association will host the second annual Sporting Clays Bang-Bang Tournament April 12 at Deer Creek Sporting Clays Range, 10514 Ehren's Cutoff Road.
There will be four shooters per team. The entry fee is $99 per shooter, which includes a catered lunch on site. Raffles and awards will immediately follow the event.
The deadline for entries and payments is March 14.
Shooters must wear eye and ear protection at all times on the course. Shooters will need 100 rounds of ammo, sizes 7.5, 8 or 9 shotgun shells only.
Deer Creek will have a limited number of shotguns and carts available to rent.
Sponsorships are also available from $50 to $1,500. Door prizes are also available.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches.
