The 29th annual Red Mule Runners Flatlanders Challenge, which includes a 5K, 10K and a 1K kids run, will be Feb. 2 in downtown Brooksville.
Races will start in front of the Hernando County Government Center, 20 N Main St. The 5K and 10K will start at 8 a.m. and the 1K kids run will start at 10 a.m.
Preregistration for the 5K and 10K races is $20 each if registered in advance and $25 on race day. Those who preregister will be guaranteed a T-shirt. The cost for the 1K kids run is $5, which includes a free T-shirt with entry.

Learn the safe way to handle guns in home
The Hernando Sportsman's Club will offer a home firearms safety course at 9 a.m. Jan. 19 in the clubhouse at the club's range in the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area off Commercial Way, north of Weeki Wachee.
All equipment and materials will be provided. The course is approximately five hours, including range time.

NAACP sets series of events for MLK Day
The Hernando County Branch of the NAACP announces its annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration events:
- Ecumenical Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 20 at Grace World Outreach "the Dome" Church, 20366 Cortez Blvd. The theme is "United and Committed As We Build a Dream." The service will include music, speeches and reflections of Dr. King by people who had personal relationships with him. The keynote speaker is Pastor David A. Garcia. - A celebration will be at 11 a.m. Jan. 21 at Kennedy Park, 899 Kennedy Blvd. This event is sponsored by the Hernando County NAACP Youth Council. The theme is "Youth Shaping Our Future." There will be music with a local disc jockey, poetry, speeches by the youth and step dancing. James C. Yant of J.C. Yant Insurance Agency will address the youth. Former sanitation workers will give reflections on Dr. King's "Last Journey." There will be a "Battle of Dances" by local dance groups.
The youth council will sell fish, barbecue ribs and chicken, and chitterling dinners throughout the day.

Impressionist to make funny on Valentine's
Brookridge Entertainment will host a Valentine's Day show featuring Fred Travalena on Feb. 14 at the Brookridge Clubhouse, 8150 Hampton St.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and showtime is 7 p.m.
Known as the "Man of 1,000 Faces," Travalena is an entertainer, impressionist and comic who received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005.

Training coming up for CPR certification
Hernando County Recreation will offer the American Red Cross certification program in Adult, Infant and Child CPR from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Jan. 23 in the Community Activity Center, 205 E Fort Dade Ave.
The cost is $35 for the class, which includes a book and face shield.
Also, those who attend the CPR class also can take the American Red Cross First Aid Certification class, which immediately follows the CPR class. Attendance at that night's CPR class is required to take this class.
The cost is $25; participants will receive a certification card that is valid for three years.

Eat dinner, then dance off any excess calories
Marine Corps League, Spring Hill Detachment 708, will host a dinner dance from 4 to 8 p.m. Jan. 26 at the detachment, 8405 Sunshine Grove Road.
Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and will include ham and scalloped potatoes. Entertainment will be provided by the Sunspots, who will perform favorite pop tunes, rock 'n' roll, doo wop, country and blues.
Tickets are $12 and must be purchased no later than Jan. 23 in the Leatherneck Lounge, which is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sundays.

Ephren Taylor to be MLK Day lecturer
Pasco-Hernando Community College's 23rd annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Lecture will feature Ephren W. Taylor, who will discuss "Living Up to Your Dream: The Soul of Success."
Taylor will give two presentations Thursday: 10 a.m. at the Performing Arts Center at PHCC West Campus, 10230 Ridge Road, New Port Richey; and 7 p.m. in Building E, Room 130, at the PHCC East Campus, 36727 Blanton Road, Dade City.
Taylor, CEO of City Capital Corp., has participated in the Wall Street Economic Summit and created an Entrepreneurial Academy at Chaney University in Pennsylvania. At the age of 12, he started his own business, and at 17, he became a millionaire by strategically integrating technology and business. Taylor hosts the "Soul of Success" radio show on XM Satellite Radio on Family Talk 170 XM.
Each presentation will be about one hour, including time for questions. There is no cost to attend.

Roast pork feature of K of C dinner Jan. 19
The Knights of Columbus, St. Theresa Council 11877, will have a dinner from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 19 in the parish hall at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 1107 Commercial Way.
The menu will include roast pork with potatoes, vegetables, roll, soup or salad, dessert, and coffee, or iced or hot tea. The cost is $7 for adults and teens, and $4 for children 4 to 12. Sodas will be available for an additional 50 cents each.

Flea market will aid Love Your Neighbor
American Legion Post 99 and Love Your Neighbor, the group that feeds the homeless and needy, will host a flea market on the third Saturday of each month at the American Legion, 208 E Fort Dade Ave. The next flea market will be 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 19.
Vendor spaces are available. The cost is $10 for a 10-foot-by-10-foot space (bring your own tables).

Donations for the flea market can be dropped off between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays at the Rising Sun Cafe, 10 S Main St., or at the American Legion on Sunday afternoons. Funds raised will benefit Love Your Neighbor's outreach as well as American Legion service projects.
