  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

The Divine Miss O. will be in town Thursday. That's Candice Olson, star of Divine Design on HGTV, regular contributor to Home magazine, and creator of a new upholstery collection for Norwalk, the Furniture Idea, for whom she's a spokeswoman. Tickets are $15 at Norwalk stores at 145A S Dale Mabry and 14425 N Dale Mabry highways, both in Tampa, and at 29870 U.S. 19 in Clearwater. Olson speaks at the Grand Hyatt on the Courtney Campbell. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Thursday; her presentation's at 6. After that she'll sign copies of her new book, Candice Olson on Design: Inspiration & Ideas for Your Home.

Check out antiques and more at show

Today and Sunday, stop by the Coliseum at 535 Fourth Ave. N in St. Petersburg for the Sunshine City Antiques & Collectibles Show. More than 100 exhibitors will be there, many with Florida-related memorabilia. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days, appraisers will give an educated opinion about those curiosities you've been hiding under the bed or in the garage ($5 per item). Admission is $6, good for both days. Hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Get steamed with washer and dryer

We've come a long way from beating laundry on the rocks on the riverbank to eliminate stains. The newest from Whirlpool: the Duet Steam washer and dryer. The front-loading washer incorporates steam to remove stains and sanitize laundry. A dispenser adds OxiClean stain remover at the appropriate time. The dryer performs conventionally or uses steam to remove wrinkles and odors. It also has a Quick Refresh cycle to tumble a few items that just need dewrinkling or removal of smoke or other odors. Use it instead of another trip through the washer or a visit to the dry cleaner. The pair are available in white or a new color, Aspen Green, for $1,499 to $1,599 for the washer and $1,199 to $1,299 for the dryer.

Box springs go under cover

If dust ruffles aren't your thing (guys, pay attention) but a bare box spring isn't either, try this tip, from Martha Stewart's Good Things for the Home: Slip a fitted sheet over the box spring. It can match your bed linens, or pick up a color in the bedroom. It's a pleasant surprise when the sheets are turned back and gives a finished look to the bed.
