  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

As the fanciful staff of REX flits lightly from festival to festival, it's time to start gearing up for Gasparilla, Carnival, Mardi Gras, whatever. This point is brought home by an e-mail from Maryann Larson, who recycles colorful parade beads.

She collects the beads thrown to crowds of watchers and sorts them by length, size and color. Then she donates them to churches, schools and Boy and Girl Scouts groups.

Certain beads work better than others for Maryann's purposes: Though she loves all kinds of beads, she prefers the cheap, brightly colored, nonbreakable variety and the polyresin krewe medallions.Got beads to recycle? Please phone (727) 726-0542 or e-mail century21@mindspring.com.

Here's a problem the Witte family hopes to solve before next Christmas. "We have two 9-foot lighted outdoor Christmas trees, but are minus the interior extension poles that hold up the star-topped circular tree." They have tried 1-inch PVC pipe to no avail; it can't support the height and weight. If you are retiring some defunct relatives of these trees and no longer need the poles, or if you possess the secret of making them stand up straight, these folks would love to hear from you. Please call (517) 331-0041 or e-mail RBWitte3@aol.com.

Oranges free for the picking: The winter harvest of back door citrus begins with an invitation from Jean of New Port Richey to enjoy some of her surplus. Please call (727) 375-5491 for directions to her tree.

Juanita Sisco of New Port Richey has a box filled with Betty Crocker boxtop coupons that she would like to donate to a person or organization that can use them. She's waiting to hear from you at (727) 846-1599.

Betty Metzger would love to find an Anagram game, which is no longer manufactured. (It was made by the Embossing Co., of Albany, N.Y., in its heyday.) It came in a blue and red box that contained square black wooden tiles bearing white embossed letters. The words "Ivory edition" were printed on the box's top. Please call (727) 547-2451 if you can help Betty.

When Linda Taylor's brother-in-law was up in the attic getting out the Christmas decorations, he ran across five boxes of trophies his kids had collected from various sports activities. Linda told him that she remembered reading in REX about organizations that work with young people and reuse trophies. If you know of any groups that might want these trophies, please call Linda at (352) 688-8942.

Peg Roberts would like to frame a copy of the sheet music for the song Sweet Carolinefor her granddaughter named - guess what? - Caroline. If you have a copy you can spare, please call Peg on her cell, (978) 395-6062.

Send requests to Reader Exchange, Floridian, St. Petersburg Times, P.O. Box 1121, St. Petersburg 33731 or e-mail cole@sptimes.com. Requests will be accepted only by mail or e-mail. Readers must agree to publication of phone numbers, including area code.
