15 to compete for Sungoddess

The Suncoasters, who produce St. Petersburg's annual Festival of States, have chosen 15 young women for the 2008 Sungoddess Court. All are eligible to be selected Sungoddess during the yearly civic celebration, and all will participate in festival activities.

All are ages 19 to 21 and were selected based on a range of qualities including poise, academic achievement, community involvement and personality.

The Sungoddess, who will be announced at the Coronation Ball on March 28, will receive a $5,000 scholarship and will represent the Festival of States and the city of St. Petersburg at various events throughout the year.

The 87th Festival of States includes the night parade on April 3 and the day parade and Familyfest on April 12.

The Fish Head Ball

Fishy Fiesta, the annual Fish Head Ball to benefit the Pier Aquarium, raised nearly $22,000 for the organization's education programs.

Debra Hempel led the event committee for the Nov. 3 celebration, which drew more than 400 guests to the Hilton St. Petersburg Bayfront and featured a mariachi band and dance music by the Surfin' Raccoons.

Additional committee members were Melissa Bender, Laura Doig, Christina Douglas,Ruth Hewlett, Linda McAllister, Linda O'Brien, Kevin Riskowitz, Sara Hoeber, Kevin Kowzan, SusanWallace, Vicky VieBrooks, Eleanor Whiteside, Gloria Wilcox, Jeff Wilcox,Patty Zimmermann, Pier executive director E. Howard Rutherford and marketing director Emily Stehle.
