Film discusses why so many came to Florida

LARGO The Florida Dream, a documentary that chronicles the social, cultural and economic forces that drove millions to migrate to Florida, will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Largo Public Library, 120 Central Park Drive. The film is narrated by Ed Asner and is based on Land of Sunshine, State of Dreams: A Social History of Modern Florida by historian and University of South Florida professor Gary Mormino. The film was produced by PBS television station WEDU and the Florida Humanities Council. DUNEDIN Class lets pooch pick up manners Have a new puppy or older dog that needs to learn some manners? A six-week training class for dogs age 4 months and older will start at 6:45 p.m. Monday at the Dunedin Community Center, 1920 Pinehurst Road. The classes will include teaching the dogs to walk on leash and learning the commands for sit, down, come and more. A six-week class for pups ages 10 to 16 weeks will include basic manners and socialization activities. The first session will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 25 at the center. CLEARWATER Civil Service Board seeks volunteer Clearwater's Civil Service Board is looking for a resident to serve on the board for a three-year term. The board conducts public hearings on proposed changes to Civil Service rules, provides advice and counsel on human resources management, receives findings of facts from hearing officers on employee disciplinary action appeals, and determines appropriate penalties, if any. CLEARWATER Learn about civil rights movement Dr. Lorraine Mayfield-Brown will give an interactive presentation for all ages about the civil rights movement Jan. 22 at 4 p.m. at the North Greenwood Library, 905 N Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. The presentation is being held in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It will focus on the civil rights movement of the '50s and '60s, which broke the pattern of racial discrimination and segregation of African Americans through nonviolent protest. Call (727) 462-6895 for information. OLDSMAR Two artists, two different subjects Meet two artists exhibiting at Oldsmar City Hall, 100 State St. W, through Feb. 28. The public is invited to meet Betsy Schoepf and Ralph Montgomery, neighbors in Indian Rocks Beach, at a reception at 6 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall. Schoepf teaches art and has been painting in oils for more than 40 years. Her favorite subject matter is beaches and their changing colors and seasons. Montgomery is a retired architect and military veteran. His works include paintings as well as sketches he made to pass the time while he was held hostage for months by the Iraqi government during the invasion of Kuwait.
